Submit Work

We will accept submissions for the 2021 Small Works on Paper exhibition starting May 18. Deadline to submit work is July 24, 2020. You may submit your work online by clicking on the "Submit Work" button at the bottom of the page. Forms are also available for at 2021SWOP 2021SWOP (259 KB) .


Small Works on Paper (SWOP) is an annual juried art exhibition presented by the Arkansas Arts Council and featuring the artwork of Arkansas Artist Registry members. Each year, the SWOP exhibition tours the state and will be on view at nine locations in Arkansas in 2021. The exhibition will open in January 2021 at East Arkansas Community College in Forrest City.


SWOP is open to current members of the Arkansas Artist Registry. (Non-members submitting an entry are required to join the Registry at time of entry. Click here to complete an application.) Current Arkansas Arts Council advisory board members, staff of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism or members of their immediate families are not eligible.


Non-members of the Artist Registry must join to become eligible to submit a Small Works on Paper entry. The Arkansas Artist Registry is free and open to all visual artists who are 18 years or older and who are Arkansas residents. Registration must be completed by July 24. Judy Ledgerwood is the juror for the 2021 Small Works on Paper. She teaches in the Department of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University, where she is the Alice Welsh Skilling Professor in the Arts. She earned a BFA at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and an MFA at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. She is a professional artist whose work is included in prominent public collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Kunstmuseum Basel. She is the recipient of awards from Artadia, the Illinois Art Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation.

Up to $2,000 will be available for juror selected awards. Selected works will become part of the SWOP permanent collection.


$10 for one entry, $20 for two entries or $25 for three entries. The deadline to submit work is July 24, 2020.

SPECIFICATIONS & Accepted artwork

All work submitted to Small Works on Paper must be original, on paper and completed within the last two years. Non-original artwork, or artwork that has been created by copying another artist's creation, including another artist's painting, drawing or photograph, is not eligible. Reproductions of any kind art are ineligible. If reference materials are used, the finished artwork must be significantly different from the source or reference material.

Eligible mediums for Small Works on Paper include painting, photography, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and collage. 

Dimensions of actual work can be any size, but if the work is accepted, the matted or mounted work must fit within a frame of one of the following sizes: 18" x 18" or 18" x 24" (H x W or W x H). Matted or mounted work, plus backing board, must not exceed 1/2" thickness to fit in frames. Frames will be provided by the Arkansas Arts Council.

Acceptable file formats are jpg (jpeg) and tiff. Optimal image size is 1920 pixels on the longest side and 1200 pixels on the shortest side with a 300 dpi. Files must be named properly with the artist's last name and the title of the artwork. Example: Smith_Trees.jpg.

A maximum of 40 works will be selected by the juror. Artwork may be refused if the digital image is not an accurate representation of the actual work. Host locations reserve the right to determine the number of works shown and layout of the exhibition at their local sites. Some locations may not display the entire exhibition.

Artists will be notified regarding acceptance in September 2020. Accepted artwork will be due in the Arkansas Arts Council office in Nov. 6. Artwork may be shipped or hand-delivered.


Please indicate the sale price of each work submitted. If the work is not for sale, please list a monetary value and "Not for Sale," NFS. Commissions are not taken on sales.


Reasonable care will be exercised in handling the artwork. Neither the Arkansas Arts Council or any host location is responsible for losses or damages. Artists may wish to provide their own insurance. Entry in this exhibition constitutes agreement with the terms and conditions of the 34th annual Small Works on Paper touring exhibition.


All artists will be notified regarding the status of their entries in September 2020.
