The 2-character play Souvenir is an easily adaptable traveling version of A Lovely Souvenir: A Fantasy in Two Acts on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkinsby Steven Temperley. Bringing to life the last 14 years of one of America’s most distinctive singers, as seen through the eyes of her long-suffering accompanist Cosme McMoon, this production stars UCA vocal faculty member Christine Donahue and ATU piano faculty member Tim Smith.

To best enjoy the play, it is important to understand who the musical phenomena Florence Foster Jenkins was—and was not. A successful singer needs talent, charisma, and interpretive ability—Florence had none of those attributes. Although she was considered one of the worst singers of all time, her single performance at Carnegie Hall sold out in 2 hours and turned away over 2,000 fans. Fans included opera stars Lily Pons and Enrico Caruso, the British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, and musical notable Cole Porter, who never missed one of her concerts and even composed a song for her.
