GetSmART! Success!

Arkansas Arts Council - Saturday, November 17, 2018

Our latest workshop is a roaring success, but more workshops are being planned!

On Saturday, visual artists learned they must express their individual voices as part of marketing. Our special speaker Jaquita Ball, who is a professional artist and marketer, gave artists tips and strategies for marketing during our latest GetSmART! learning series workshop at the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

“When you do your art, you have to tell a story,” Ball told artists. “(Buyers) want to hear why you created that piece of art. They want a piece of you.”

About 16 artists attended the workshop to learn how best to find their stories and present a personal touch to their artwork. At the workshop, Ball covered a slew of topics, including how best to use individual social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to tell artists’ stories, how best to price artwork, how to deal with artwork donations to charities, how to target buyers, clients and galleries that would be most interested in their works and how to work with print-on-demand companies.

“I have a passion for wanting to see other artists succeed,” Ball said.

Attendees called the workshop engaging and informative. It also offered a great networking opportunity. Attendees learned from Ball and each other, said mixed-media artist Anne Bell, of Little Rock.

The workshop helped artist Kimiara Johnson, of Pine Bluff who does inspirational art, find her market and to collect information for an e-mail newsletter.

The workshop Saturday was the first for Bell and Johnson, but artist Ebony Blevins, of Little Rock, said she has attended three workshops so far and plans to attend more. Blevins is transitioning from being a freelance photographer into doing fine art, she said. GetSmART! workshops offer artists on all levels educational opportunities, she said.

“I learn a lot in each class I come to,” Blevins said.
