2018 - Brockwell Gospel Music School

The Brockwell Gospel Music School was formed in 1947 to give people of all ages the opportunity to learn to sing, play the piano, and lead the singing in their churches. Founded by a core group in Izard County, lessons began under shade trees or in a brush-arbor, an outdoor shade structure made of limbs and brush. At the school, students are taught to recognize notes by a particular shape. A popular teaching device in American singing schools since 1801, it’s designed to facilitate congregational and community singing. For people with a limited education, learning “shape-note” singing enables them to participate in church services. The traditions were perpetuated by graduates of the school coming back to teach and bringing their children as students. Now, the music school is held annually for two weeks with an enrollment of more than 100 students in an air-conditioned building with enough space to have classes, private lessons and a closing program.
